Pendant longtemps, LinkedIn a \u00e9t\u00e9 pour moi l'interface pas fun par d\u00e9finition. La plateforme des f\u00e9licitations obligatoires, des \u00ab ravis de rejoindre l'aventure \u00bb et des posts qui c\u00e9l\u00e8brent tout, tout le temps, avec le m\u00eame enthousiasme calibr\u00e9. J'avais du mal \u00e0 y voir une utilit\u00e9 r\u00e9elle, et encore moins \u00e0 y apporter quoi que ce soit de pertinent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quand ma partenaire strat\u00e9gique, Claire Lemaitre-Smith, m'a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 pour la dixi\u00e8me fois de m'y int\u00e9resser \u00ab tu sais, quand m\u00eame, \u00e7a pourrait \u00eatre vraiment bien pour ta com \u00bb j'ai fait la grimace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et puis un jour, en faisant d\u00e9filer mon fil, quelque chose m'a arr\u00eat\u00e9e. Quelqu'un dans mon r\u00e9seau commen\u00e7ait un nouveau poste, a priori pas l'information de l'ann\u00e9e, mais l'image qui accompagnait la notification \u00e9tait fra\u00eeche, vivante, singuli\u00e8re. Loin des visuels g\u00e9n\u00e9riques que j'associais \u00e0 la plateforme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J'ai cherch\u00e9 qui l'avait faite. C'\u00e9tait les \u00e9quipes de Buck<\/a>, un studio avec lequel j'ai collabor\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs reprises, notamment pour Google<\/a>, sur des projets qui ont tous en commun de donner vie \u00e0 des interfaces pour susciter une \u00e9motion positive chez ceux et celles qui l'utilisent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce qui m'avait frapp\u00e9e dans ces illustrations, c'est qu'elles fonctionnaient sans forcer. Elles avaient une pr\u00e9sence, calme, pr\u00e9cise, qui rendait le fil d'actualit\u00e9 LinkedIn vraiment plus vivant. Juste des formes, de la po\u00e9sie, des personnages, une intention claire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce que Buck avait r\u00e9ussi l\u00e0, c'est quelque chose de difficile \u00e0 calibrer : des images pens\u00e9es pour un milliard d'utilisateur\u00b7ices, dans des dizaines de contextes culturels diff\u00e9rents, capables de faire ressentir quelque chose \u00e0 presque tout le monde simultan\u00e9ment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le secret tient \u00e0 quelques choix pr\u00e9cis. Les personnages sont stylis\u00e9s, les proportions d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment exag\u00e9r\u00e9es entre les figures et les objets qui les entourent. Ce choix, aller vers l'abstraction plut\u00f4t que le r\u00e9alisme, concentre toute l'attention sur l'\u00e9motion et l'atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les figures deviennent inclusives et symboliques, sans \u00eatre rattach\u00e9es \u00e0 une identit\u00e9 particuli\u00e8re. Tout le monde peut s'y reconna\u00eetre, personne n'est d\u00e9fini trop \u00e9troitement. Chaque geste de personnage, chaque m\u00e9taphore visuelle avait \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9prouv\u00e9 pour \u00eatre compris intuitivement, quelle que soit la culture de l'utilisateur\u00b7ice, son secteur, son histoire. Une sorte d'illustration universelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C'est cette m\u00eame logique qui a structur\u00e9 mon travail sur Google Contacts VIP<\/strong>, un widget du Google Pixel con\u00e7u pour aider les utilisateur\u00b7ices \u00e0 rester proches de leurs contacts les plus importants (rappels d'anniversaires, dates significatives, acc\u00e8s rapide aux proches depuis l'\u00e9cran d'accueil).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mon r\u00f4le consistait \u00e0 illustrer les diff\u00e9rents moments de ce widget : les dates importantes, les empty states, les \u00e9crans d'introduction au service. Des illustrations fixes, con\u00e7ues pour vivre \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur d'une interface, dans le flux quotidien d'un\u00b7e utilisateur\u00b7ice sur son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce type de projet est particuli\u00e8rement exigeant parce qu'une illustration d'interface n'a pas le luxe du temps long. Elle a quelques fractions de seconde pour fonctionner. Quand on d\u00e9couvre le widget pour la premi\u00e8re fois, tout se joue vite : reconna\u00eetre que c'est Google, sentir que c'est nouveau, avoir envie d'en savoir plus. Ce n'est pas une m\u00e9canique abstraite : c'est exactement ce que l'illustration provoque, ou pas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Smartphone<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

L'objectif, dit simplement : mener l'utilisateur\u00b7ice \u00e0 se dire \u00e7a a l'air simple, et \u00e7a m'est utile.<\/em> C'est sommaire formul\u00e9 ainsi, mais c'est toute la subtilit\u00e9 de ce type de travail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur ce projet, j'ai travaill\u00e9 dans le territoire visuel de Timo Kuilder, en y apportant mon style et ma sensibilit\u00e9. Le brief \u00e9tait d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment ouvert : une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, une palette, des formes g\u00e9om\u00e9triques, et une instruction : faire en sorte que les illustrations vivent dans le m\u00eame monde, sans r\u00e9pliquer ce qui existait d\u00e9j\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J'ai construit des personnages divers en \u00e2ge, en genre, en couleur de peau. Mais la vraie question n'\u00e9tait pas que la repr\u00e9sentation : c'\u00e9tait aussi l'attitude, l'\u00e9nergie. Des personnages qui d\u00e9gagent quelque chose : une chaleur qui vient de leurs expressions, un sentiment de communaut\u00e9 dans la fa\u00e7on dont ils habitent l'espace. Le m\u00eame principe que les illustrations LinkedIn de Buck : une abstraction qui laisse de la place \u00e0 l'universel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voil\u00e0 ce qu'une bonne illustration fait \u00e0 l'int\u00e9rieur d'une interface : elle rend un moment digital un peu plus humain, un fil un peu plus vivant, une connexion un peu moins automatique.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C'est ce que Buck a fait pour LinkedIn. C'est ce que j'ai fait avec eux pour Google Contacts VIP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
